IS CROCHET CLOTHING THE FUTURE?

Crochet is derived from a French term which means “small hook”.

Crocheters could make a dress, bag or even a cap by using a hook to interlock loops of yarn.

A few days ago, we interviewed a renowned Ugandan-based crocheter. She is very passionate about her craft and she inspires us with her story.

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Anitah Moreen Nairuku, from Uganda. I’m the founder of Nitah crochets, a fashion brand that makes durable crochet dresses.

What do you love about fashion?

Fashion is expressive. It defines people by what they wear. And “a good outfit is a good mood”.

When did you start your brand?

Nitah crochets kicked off in March 2017.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

God willing, I plan to train and work with a few disabled dedicated people, in a few years from now. My dream is to organize a crochet-themed festival in my country. That will inspire and support many crocheters in Uganda.

Do you have other passions?

Yes, I am passionate about farming. Poultry and rabbit rearing to be precise.

Tell us about your best experience as a crocheter.

When I started, I stole a few pictures from Google. So I decided to convince my Facebook friends that I could make the crochet bikinis in those pictures. Shortly after, a close friend of mine trusted me enough to make a bikini for her.

The bikini design she wanted me to recreate was a complex one. I could remember using almost two weeks to work out the mathematics. The bikini came out nice in the end. And each time I see those pictures of my first client wearing my crochet bikini, it gives me joy and confidence. That bikini remains one of my favourites to date.

Who is your fashion icon?

I like Noorvana.

What inspires you?

Well, the fact that I can turn my passion into a paycheck inspires me every day. Most people may have knowledge and skills to make crochet. And they don’t make a living out of it.

“MAI ATAFO AND KIMONO COLLECTIONS ARE MY GREATEST INSPIRATION” – TRENDY JOHNSON

Building a career in fashion designing can be a bumpy ride. Every ambitious fashion designer must have the ability to innovate and create on a daily basis. Fashion designers deserve some accolades due to the role they play in making sure we always look classy and stylish.

Our spotlight at the moment is on a passion driven top-notch designer, his well-tailored men’s suit speak volumes about his fashion brand. Get a glass of chilled drink, sit back and read the full interview below.

Tell us about yourself.
My name is D.M Johnson, I am a Nigerian born fashion designer (who specialises in Men’s wear). I graduated from the University of Port Harcourt in 2015, where I studied political and administrative studies. I am a business minded person and this trait reflects in my relationship with people. I enjoy my spare time by reading motivational books, sketching new designs or listening to edifying music.

What year did you start your fashion brand?
Trendy Johnson Signature started in 2011, but our outlet was officially opened in 2015.

What is unique about your brand?
I’d say the unique creativity that goes into all our men’s wear make them standout anywhere. All dresses made by Trendy Johnson have detailed finishing touches and are very durable due to the top quality fabrics used.

What is your biggest challenge running your brand?
Based on experience, inadequate human resources and low patronage are the major challenges I face while running the brand.

Most designers within Port-Harcourt obviously have quality products, but still, need more dedicated hands in order to meet up with demands. On the other hand, the high taste for foreign fashion wears by our people here in Nigeria has been detrimental to indigenous designers like me.

What do you love about fashion?
Fashion gives me the ability to express myself without uttering a single word. That feeling is Bae.

What is your favourite colour, why?
I love two colours, black and white (or monochrome). I see life and understand fashion in these 2 contrasts.

Kindly mention five (5) items every man should have in his wardrobe.

  • A Pair of Suit (tailored by Trendy Johnson)
  • A Pair of Shoe (Corporate shoes)
  • A clean white shirt.
  • Tie
  • A nice Cologne (Perfume), A beautiful smile will definitely complement his outfit too.

Who inspires you the most?
Nigerian designer’s like Mai Atafo and Kimono Collections are my greatest inspiration.

“We Leave Our Clients Feeling Like Queens…” – Onome Blessing

Can you imagine how many indigenous African fashion designers the world hasn’t heard about yet? The shocking truth is, the fashion shows you watch can’t showcase every single designer’s piece.

Back here in Nigeria, fashion designers are always raising the bar due to steady innovation. The Vahvell crew put the spotlight on one of the most talented and creative designers from the south-south region. She is obviously disrupting the Nigerian fashion industry with her “queen themed” designs. Read the brief interview we had with her below.

Tell us about yourself.
My name is Onome Ruona Blessing, I am from Delta state, Nigeria. I am also the founder of The Roxanne Clothings, a fashion brand I started in 2016.

Dress by : The Roxanne Clothings

What do you love about fashion?
When it comes to fashion, I always derive this “freedom of expression”.

What is unique about your brand?
What makes us unique is our creativity, and our ability to leave our clients feeling like queens the moment they wear our dress.
Roxanne Clothings is also dedicated to making sophisticated, creative and innovative designs to help enhance the sexuality of a woman. We believe that every woman is a queen and deserves to be dressed as one.

Dress by : The Roxanne Clothings

Tell us one challenge you face running your brand.
One major challenge I have is to make our clients (women) understand the creativity that we put into our dresses, so they can defend their style anywhere because they know the value.

“Kalista Brand Is For The Woman Who Loves Attention And Class” – Chidinma

When you buy a bag, sandals or hair band, you’re purchasing a product that was made by an accessory designer. Designers can be called artists because they use artistic skills and illustrations to develop patterns that you can see and feel.

In Nigeria for example, there is a high demand for European and American brands which is very detrimental to our indigenous brands in Africa. The main goal of Vahvell is to create more awareness for fashion brands (in Nigeria and Ghana for now). Together we can create a standard and viable market for fashion designers by purchasing indigenous products often.

A few days ago we had a brief interview with a very vibrant and gorgeous designer. In fact, her products are top-notch and she’s one of the best designers you will be glad to work with. A glass of chilled juice will be just fine as you scroll through the interview.

Tell us about yourself.
My name is Enwereji Chidinma, I am the founder of Kalista Dezain, a premium fashion brand for all ankara lovers. I started the brand in 2017 in Port-Harcourt and Kalista brand has a wide range of products designed with ankara to give you that feel of Africa anywhere you go.

Designed by: Kalista Brand

What do you love about fashion?
I love the creativity that comes with fashion and the change in trends.

What is unique about your brand?
All our products are durable, classy and unique in design. Kalista brand is for the Woman who loves attention and class.

Do you have any other passions?
I love singing and dancing.

Designed by: Kalista Brand

What is your biggest challenge running your brand?
As a Luxury brand, our products require intense targeted marketing due to high demand from our potential clients in the diaspora. Getting new customers can also be challenging sometimes.

What is your favourite colour?
I can’t pick a favourite colour, I just love blue, purple and red colours

In your opinion, mention 5 things every woman should have.
Every woman should have bags, shoes, fashion accessories, belts and nice Perfume.

Designed by : Kalista Brand

Who inspires you the most?
They are too numerous to mention,…there is really no “most” because different people have different attributes that draw me to them.
